Elizabeth Debicki’s victory at the 2024 Emmys may have been fit for royalty, but even she was taken aback by the win. The Crown star, who portrays Princess Diana, confessed her disbelief after receiving her first Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series during the prestigious event on September 15.
“I was shocked,” Elizabeth revealed in an exclusive chat with a private news outlet at the after-party. “What you realize quickly when you’re nominated is that it’s surreal to even be in that category. It’s already outrageous to be included.”
Reflecting on her fellow nominees, which included her co-star Lesley Manville, The Gilded Age’s Christine Baranski, and The Morning Show’s Greta Lee, among others, Elizabeth added, “When you’re on panels with these women, you think, ‘Everyone here deserves a prize.’ Honestly, I didn’t expect to win. It’s wonderful but also feels a bit strange.”
Dressed in an elegant black Christian Dior gown with a square neckline, Elizabeth took the stage to accept her award. She gave a heartfelt mention to her longtime hair and makeup artist, Deb Ormrod, thanking her for helping her transform into her iconic character. “I’ve been meaning to thank them for ages,” she said. “I don’t look anything like Princess Diana in real life, and they worked wonders. I would walk in looking exhausted in pajamas and walk out looking like my character.”
Despite the grand moment, the actress, known for her role in The Great Gatsby, admitted she didn’t prepare an acceptance speech. Last year, she was nominated in the same category but lost to Jennifer Coolidge from The White Lotus. This time, Elizabeth’s surprise win left her with little time to prepare, but the victory was no less sweet.
