Mental health impact of digitalization

The age of expanding digitalisation has caused trauma, anxiety and depression stemming from a voracity to fit into a constantly scurrying global society. In the face of societal expectations and peer pressure, people eventually become overwhelmed and lose their footing.

The media plays a pivotal role in promoting such trends, especially among the youth. Fast-forwarding fashion trends, films, television and advertisements inject falsity and superficiality among the youth, making them delusional over time. Keeping oneself connected with such trends for a sustained period has the potential to cause psychological harm to the users.

Celebrities showcase a very frivolous, extravagant as well as posh lifestyle that seems to sway the young generation. The presentation of such things through media platforms affects mental health. The fake lifestyle enchants and enamours people, which means more clicks across social media platforms.

Practically, mental health can be nourished, cherished and celebrated if taken care of properly. People need to invest their time in exercise, walking, jogging and other healthy activities. The World Mental Health Day, observed on Oct 10 every year, ensures that physical as well as mental health is duley accentuated. For our own, sake we need to take every day of the year as a ‘mental health day’.
