The capital is on high alert as Interior Minister Senator Mohsin Naqvi expressed concerns about armed supporters of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) planning a protest in the city.
Speaking at D-Chowk, Naqvi acknowledged the right to protest but warned that PTI activists are reportedly “carrying weapons” and could incite unrest. He stated, “We will not permit anyone to damage property,” and apologized to Islamabad residents for any disruption.
Naqvi clarified that law enforcement personnel have not been armed and mentioned that evidence, including videos, shows PTI supporters with weapons. He urged Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur to reconsider his actions, emphasizing that while protests are a right, this is not the right time.
He also highlighted the need to ensure the safety of foreign dignitaries in Islamabad, asserting, “I am absolutely clear that they are planning an attack on Islamabad.”
PTI has scheduled a demonstration at D-Chowk today, with Gandapur confirming he will participate. The party aims to showcase its strength, with regional chapters mobilizing supporters from across the country.
The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa chapter has completed preparations for the protest, with convoys departing from Peshawar Interchange at 10 a.m. and Swabi at 11 a.m. Assembly members have been instructed to bring 500 supporters each.
Participants have been advised to come equipped with tools to clear obstacles and protective items against teargas. Ambulances and machinery for removing barriers will accompany the convoy.
Party leaders have acknowledged past planning deficiencies and committed to ensuring that the protest proceeds to Islamabad.
In preparation for the anticipated rally, the Punjab government has imposed Section 144 for three days in Rawalpindi, Attock, and Sargodha, banning political gatherings and sit-ins. The Metro Bus service in Rawalpindi will remain suspended during this period.
Additionally, Section 144 has been implemented in Lahore for six days, along with restrictions in various other districts to maintain law and order.
