Sindh demands fair gas allocation from Centre amid shortages

KARACHI: Sindh Energy Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah on Tuesday called on the federal government to provide gas to Sindh in line with its needs, emphasizing that the province is facing gas shortages despite being the largest producer in the country.

Chairing a high-level meeting of the Directorate of Oil and Gas, Nasir Shah highlighted that Sindh produces between 1800 to 2000 mmcfd of gas, accounting for 65% of the country’s total production, yet continues to suffer from inadequate gas supply.

During the meeting, the Minister was briefed on Articles 158 and 172 (3) of the Constitution, which outline the rights of provinces concerning oil, natural gas, and minerals. Shah stated that the Sindh government had already requested representation on the boards of directors for relevant companies and vowed to follow up with the federal government.

Shah also instructed officials to explore ways to increase revenue from the oil and gas sector, stressing that ensuring gas supply to consumers in the province remains his top priority.

The meeting was attended by provincial Secretary Energy Mossadiq Ahmad Khan, Chairman District Council Sukkur Syed Kamil Haider Shah, Director of Oil and Gas Khadim Hussain, and Aamir Mujtaba.
