Woman posing as victim’s mother arrested in college scandal case

LAHORE: Lahore police on Tuesday arrested a woman from Karachi who posed as the mother of an alleged rape victim in connection with a private college scandal.

The suspect was brought back to Lahore, where a case had been registered at the Gulberg police station under the newly enacted PECA Act by the Punjab government.

The woman will be presented before the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to record her statement. According to the police, the number of cases related to the spread of fake news in the alleged scandal has now reached four.

Investigations revealed that the social media page which first spread the fake rape story was created on the same day. A misleading video shared by a college student featured another girl who was injured and admitted to a hospital.

Additionally, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) discovered over 950 online pages that spread false information without verifying the news.
