China and Pakistan sign MoU to enhance space and big data collaboration for SDGs

BEIJING: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between China’s International Research Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals (CBAS) and Pakistan’s Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO).

The partnership aims to leverage space and big data technologies to promote natural resource management and advance regional Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), according to a report by China Economic Net (CEN).

The collaboration will enhance China-Pakistan joint research initiatives by utilizing data from the Sustainable Development Science Satellite 1 (SDGSAT-1). This satellite is key to supporting the attainment of the SDGs and fostering a data-driven approach to sustainable development.

Professor Guo Huadong, Director-General of CBAS, emphasized the importance of big data and technological innovation in addressing the challenges outlined in the UN 2030 Agenda. He noted that enhanced data collection, analysis, and sharing can provide comprehensive insights into sustainable development goals.

During the event, Professor Guo and Tang Shihao, Deputy Director of China’s National Satellite Meteorological Centre (NSMC), presented the “Collection of SDGSAT-1 Satellite Nighttime Light” and the “Atlas of SDGSAT-1 Satellite Nighttime Light Image” to scholars from Pakistan, Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, Thailand, and Seychelles.

The atlas, based on data from the SDGSAT-1 satellite launched in November 2021, is the first space science satellite dedicated to supporting the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
