Japanese envoy lauds cultural and economic ties as he prepares to depart for Croatia

ISLAMABAD: Japanese Ambassador to Pakistan, WADA Mitsuhiro, held a farewell reception at his residence in Islamabad to honor Pakistani dignitaries and friends.

Ambassador WADA, who will assume a new role as Japan’s Ambassador to Croatia, is set to leave Pakistan on November 19.

Ambassador WADA has served in Pakistan since October 2021, working to deepen Japan-Pakistan relations through economic cooperation, cultural exchange, and personal engagement. Reflecting on his time in Pakistan, he remarked, “Pakistan is very friendly to Japan. I’ve aimed to build on this goodwill through various efforts to enhance our historical ties.”

This year marks 70 years of Japan’s official development assistance (ODA) to Pakistan. Emphasizing Japan’s commitment to people-centered support, he explained, “We work with local communities, supporting them to become self-sustaining. Rather than only providing resources, JICA runs alongside Pakistanis, helping them drive their own development.”

He noted the importance of cultural exchanges, commending organizations such as the Pakistan Japan Cultural Association, Lahore Arts Foundation Trust, and the Lahore Bonsai Society. He also recognized the role of MEXT Scholarship alumni in bridging gaps between the two nations.

The ambassador expressed appreciation for the many Pakistanis he met who are committed to strengthening Japan-Pakistan relations. “Without these dedicated individuals, our friendship would not have been possible,” he said.

Addressing Pakistan’s current challenges, Ambassador WADA expressed confidence in the country’s resilience. “Once all sectors unite on a common cause, Pakistan can overcome these challenges and secure long-term development,” he stated, reaffirming Japan’s ongoing support.

In late November, Ambassador AKAMATSU Shuichi, former Consul-General of Japan in Shanghai, will arrive in Pakistan to succeed Ambassador WADA. Minister TAKANO Shuichi will also join as Deputy Chief of Mission. Ambassador WADA encouraged his Pakistani friends to extend their warm support to the incoming diplomatic team.
