Punjab CM launches Journalist Colony Phase II for 3,200 journalists

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced the establishment of a new housing colony, allocating plots to 3,200 journalists in Lahore.

This initiative, Journalist Colony Lahore Phase II, aims to provide secure housing for members of the press.

CM Maryam Nawaz instructed the Ministry of Information to expedite the colony’s setup and ensure that all legal requirements are met swiftly to facilitate prompt plot distribution. She shared these directives in a recent meeting with Punjab Information Minister Uzma Bukhari, emphasizing the importance of supporting the journalist community.

“Journalists and the government are like two wheels of the same vehicle; providing plots is their right, not a favor,” Maryam Nawaz remarked, underscoring that all allocations would be based on merit and in full compliance with legal procedures.

According to a media report, the Ministry of Information Punjab will soon invite applications from journalists, including those outside the Lahore Press Club. An official advertisement for applications is expected within the next few days.

The first Journalist Housing Scheme in Lahore was introduced in 2004, under then Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi. Situated near Harbanspura on Canal Road, the colony provided housing to journalists from various newspapers, marking a significant milestone for the city’s journalist community.
