Kamala Harris Delays Concession Speech Amid Tight Election Loss to Trump, Plans to Address Nation Soon

Kamala Harris has yet to concede the 2024 presidential election to Donald Trump, with pressure mounting as more results show her lagging behind. As of Wednesday morning, Trump has secured 51% of the popular vote to Harris’s 47.5%, along with key electoral states that handed him the victory. This result has left Harris on track for a narrower Electoral College outcome than any Democratic candidate since 1988.

After multiple news outlets projected Trump’s win around 5:30 am ET, Harris’s team announced she would address supporters Wednesday afternoon at Howard University. She initially planned to attend the watch party there on Election Night, but as results came in, Harris opted to stay at her residence.

The delay has left some supporters frustrated. Former White House staffer Barbara Heineback commented, “I’m disappointed she didn’t make a statement to her university. Even if it’s hard, acknowledging it is important.”

Critics, including GOP donor David Sacks, have pointed out that delaying her response may lessen its impact. However, the Harris campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond assured supporters that every vote is still being counted and promised that Harris would speak to the nation soon.

Meanwhile, President Biden has yet to make a public statement following the election results. Reports indicate he watched the returns with family and friends at the White House but retired as the night wore on.

In a historic win, Trump is set to become the first U.S. president to serve non-consecutive terms in more than 130 years.
