Mohammad Asif makes history with third IBSF World Snooker Championship victory

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani snooker star Mohammad Asif on Wednesday secured the IBSF World Snooker Championship title for a third time, defeating Iran’s Asian champion Ali Ghareghozlou 5-3 in a thrilling final.

Held in Qatar, the 9-frame final saw Asif maintain his exceptional form, dominating throughout and claiming the prestigious title once again. His victory brings him level with India’s Pankaj Advani, who has also won the World Snooker Championship three times.

Asif, 42, from Faisalabad, has had a remarkable journey in snooker. He first won the title in 2012, followed by a second victory in 2019, and now his third triumph further solidifies his place in the sport’s elite.

Throughout the tournament, Asif showcased his prowess with six century breaks, setting a new record. He reached the final after defeating Cyprus’ Michael Georgiou 5-3 in an exciting semi-final.

In response to his win, Alamgir Sheikh, Chairman of the Pakistan Snooker and Billiards Association, along with other officials, praised Asif’s exceptional achievement, calling it a moment of great pride for Pakistan.

They expressed their hope that, like Arshad Nadeem’s gold medal at the Paris Olympics, Asif’s third world title would be celebrated with deserving recognition and accolades.
