Harris accepts defeat, pledges to keep pushing for justice and equality

WASHINGTON: Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday conceded the 2024 U.S. presidential race to President-elect Donald Trump during a heartfelt address at Howard University.

In her speech, she emphasized the importance of a peaceful transfer of power and the core values of democracy.

Harris congratulated Trump on his victory, underscoring the democratic principle that when an election is lost, the result must be accepted. “It’s a fundamental part of democracy,” she said, pointing out the contrast with Trump’s refusal to accept the 2020 results.

She also reaffirmed her commitment to the causes her campaign championed, including economic stability and reproductive rights, and urged her supporters to keep fighting for these principles. “This is not a time to give up; it’s a time to roll up our sleeves,” she declared, vowing to continue her efforts in the courts, voting booths, and public spaces.

Despite her historic campaign, which saw her become the first Black and South Asian woman to secure a presidential nomination, voter concerns over inflation and immigration swung key states in favor of Trump. His victory also secured Republican control of the Senate.

Harris ended her speech by encouraging young voters to stay engaged, stating, “Don’t ever give up. You have the capacity to do extraordinary good.”

As Trump prepares for a historic second term, despite facing multiple legal challenges, he is expected to name a cabinet of loyalists and allies, signaling a major shift in U.S. policies. The new administration’s focus is likely to include conservative economic policies, defense priorities, and an unconventional approach to health and governance.
