KP up to file contempt plea against ECP for not allocating reserved seats

  • Barrister Saif says ECP not only committed contempt of court, but it also violated Article 6 of the Constitution

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Adviser Barrister Saif on Friday revealed that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government would file a writ petition against the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for ‘defying the Supreme Court reserved seats verdict’.

Barrister Saif, in a statement, said the provincial government had decided to file a writ petition against the ECP over its failure to allocate reserved seats to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) as ruled by the apex court.

“The ECP hasn’t issued notification of reserved seats despite the Supreme Court’s (SC) majority verdict. It also hasn’t issued schedule for election of KP’s Senate seats. The approval of the writ petition was given during the last provincial cabinet meeting presided over by KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur,” he added.

According to the information adviser, the KP Advocate General is going to file the petition, claiming the ECP used delaying tactics and did not obey a clear verdict of the Supreme Court.

Barrister Saif condemned the ECP, which has always been biased against PTI, and brought significant losses to the party. In fact, not only did the ECP indulge into contempt of court, but it also violated Article 6 of the Constitution, he said.

He further said that the provincial government wouldn’t tolerate these alleged injustices and remained determined to hold ECP responsible for its actions.
