King Charles marked a busy week by making an unusual decision to grant Honorary Knighthoods to King Abdullah of Jordan and King Hamad of Bahrain. The two monarchs were appointed as Honorary Knights Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order following their recent visits to the United Kingdom. Traditionally, this honour is reserved for members of the British royal family or heirs to thrones, making the decision highly noteworthy.
The appointments come as both Abdullah and Hamad celebrate their Silver Jubilees this year, adding personal significance to the honours. The Royal Victorian Order, established by Queen Victoria during her Diamond Jubilee, recognizes service to the British monarchy. Unlike European royals who are often granted higher honours, non-European monarchs are typically inducted into the Order of Bath during state visits, though this was not the purpose of their recent trips.
In addition to these appointments, King Charles celebrated his 76th birthday by opening two Coronation Food Hubs, appearing in person at one and virtually at the other. The King also unveiled a new tartan, the Balmoral Glen Gelder, designed at his request. The tartan, featuring greens, blues, and reds inspired by rural Highland designs, will be used for furnishings and products at Balmoral Castle, connecting the estate’s heritage with its modern use.
