Jim Carrey’s older sister, Rita, passed away on Nov. 14, 2024, her husband Alex confirmed in a heartfelt statement. Rita, known for her work as a radio host and singer, died peacefully surrounded by family and friends. Her passing comes five years after the loss of her brother John, who died at 60.
“It is with heavy heart and my deepest sadness that Rita passed away peacefully and quietly,” Alex wrote. The couple had been together for 16 years and were married in July 2023 in a ceremony Rita had always dreamed of. “Rita always had a loving soul and wanted to help everyone, even total strangers,” he added, calling her his “bestest friend” and “beautiful wife.”
A candlelight vigil will be held in Rita’s memory on Dec. 7, and donations are being requested for Gillian’s Place, a shelter in Ontario dedicated to ending domestic violence. Alex also reflected on their life together, writing, “She filled everyone’s heart with joy with every step she took. Goodbye my love, goodbye my friend, until we meet again.”
Rita was a beloved radio personality, known for her work with 4680Q and The Peet & Reet Show. Her passing marks another tragedy for Jim Carrey, who lost his brother John in 2019 to aplastic anemia. Jim, the youngest of four siblings, has not yet commented on Rita’s death. The Carrey family has faced hardships, including periods of homelessness during Jim’s teenage years, which shaped their resilience and bond.
Rita’s husband shared that Christmas was her favorite holiday and that she had recently started a fundraiser for a local charity. “It’s been a wonderful and crazy journey with Rita,” Alex wrote. “She really did have the time of her life.”
