Whitney Cummings recently revealed an intriguing “what if” moment in Sabrina Carpenter’s career, sharing that the young star was turned down for a role on *The Conners*. However, Cummings views this rejection as a pivotal blessing in disguise.
Speaking at ELLE’s Women in Hollywood Celebration on Nov. 19 in Beverly Hills, the comedian and *Two Broke Girls* creator opened up about the lessons she’s learned throughout her career. “This business is mostly rejection,” the 42-year-old told PEOPLE, emphasizing the importance of getting comfortable with hearing “no.”
Cummings elaborated that rejection often creates room for better opportunities. Highlighting Carpenter’s experience, she said, “Sabrina Carpenter auditioned … and it wasn’t the right fit. She got a rejection that day when we were casting the daughter,” referencing a role that ultimately went to *Shameless* actress Emma Kenney.
“And thank God we said no to her,” Cummings added. “Because she’d be stuck on a sitcom set and not being Sabrina Carpenter.”
Carpenter, now 25, initially gained recognition on the Disney Channel’s *Girl Meets World*. Since then, she has skyrocketed to fame as a singer, delivering chart-topping hits like “Espresso,” “Please Please Please,” and “Taste.” Currently, she’s captivating audiences worldwide on her international *Short n’ Sweet* tour.
Cummings used Carpenter’s story to illustrate how a “yes” isn’t always the best outcome. “Sometimes a yes is the worst thing you can get, because then you’re stuck on the wrong show for seven years,” she explained. “You’re in the wrong thing.”
The comedian also shared some invaluable advice she received from another industry professional: “Get your personal life in order, [save] the drama for your work — you know, have a boring life.” Reflecting on her own journey, Cummings admitted, “I’m with a man that I think I need to rescue. I’m dating drug addicts. I’m not able to set boundaries.” She emphasized the importance of balancing personal stability with professional success.
