First commercial flight lands at Pakistan’s largest airport in Gwadar

GWADAR: Pakistan marked a historic milestone in aviation on Monday as the first commercial flight touched down at the New Gwadar International Airport, signaling the commencement of operations at the country’s largest airport.

PIA flight PK-503 departed from Karachi at 9:50 AM, carrying 46 passengers, and landed at the state-of-the-art facility in Gwadar at 11:15 AM. The aircraft was greeted with a traditional water cannon salute upon arrival, signifying the importance of the occasion.

Defence and Aviation Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif welcomed the inaugural flight, describing the airport as a gateway to new economic, trade, and tourism opportunities. “This airport is not just an aviation hub; it represents Gwadar’s growing importance as a center for trade and regional connectivity,” he said during the ceremony.

The New Gwadar International Airport, which spans an impressive 4,300 acres, is now Pakistan’s largest airport. Designed to accommodate domestic and international flights, the facility is expected to enhance connectivity with key global markets, including the UAE, Europe, the Far East, Central Asia, and Africa.

A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) spokesperson expressed pride in the airline’s role in the historic flight, highlighting the airport’s strategic importance. “The opening of this facility strengthens Gwadar’s position as a gateway for regional and global trade,” the spokesperson said.

The new airport is a key component of Gwadar’s transformation into an economic hub under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). It is anticipated to drive regional development by attracting investment and promoting tourism.

Officials emphasized that the airport’s capacity to handle large-scale operations will make Gwadar a central point for international trade and economic growth, further boosting its strategic importance on the global stage.

The successful landing of PK-503 represents a new chapter in Gwadar’s evolution, positioning it as a critical link between Pakistan and the rest of the world.
