LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has summoned Hamiza Mukhtar, the woman accusing Pakistan cricket star Babar Azam of harassment and unfulfilled marriage promises, to appear before the court on February 6.
Justice Asjad Javed Gharal, presiding over the hearing, emphasized that the court would proceed with its ruling on Babar Azam’s appeal if the complainant fails to attend the next hearing.
The case stems from allegations made by Hamiza Mukhtar, who claims she was in a relationship with Babar Azam before he rose to fame. Mukhtar has accused the cricketer of physical assault, broken marriage promises, and coercing her into an abortion. She alleges that Babar abandoned her once his cricketing career gained momentum.
During Thursday’s hearing, Babar Azam’s legal counsel, Advocate Azeem Akram, challenged a lower court’s order directing the registration of a case against the cricketer. The LHC has temporarily suspended the lower court’s ruling but noted that Mukhtar’s appearance is essential to continue the proceedings.
“If the complainant wishes to pursue this case, she must appear in person at the next hearing,” remarked Justice Gharal. The judge further stated that any unnecessary delays would not be entertained.
The case has drawn public attention due to the high-profile nature of the allegations involving Babar Azam, who is widely regarded as one of Pakistan’s most celebrated cricketers.
Mukhtar’s allegations, which include claims of harassment, coercion, and broken promises, have been repeatedly denied by Babar Azam, who maintains his innocence. His legal team argues that the claims are baseless and intended to tarnish his reputation.
The LHC has urged both parties to present their arguments conclusively in the upcoming hearing to ensure a fair and timely resolution.
