PESHAWAR: In a significant relief effort, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has dispatched a fresh shipment of 1500 kilograms of essential medicines to Upper Kurram, where violence has disrupted daily life.
The medicine, delivered via helicopter, is intended to address the health needs of the affected population in the region.
Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, overseeing the operation, assured the public that he is personally monitoring the relief efforts to ensure all necessary supplies reach the region swiftly. The consignment, which includes antibiotics, painkillers, syrups, and child-specific medications, was handed over to the Medical Superintendent of Parachinar, the central town in Upper Kurram.
Gandapur further confirmed that the delivery of medical supplies would continue via helicopter until ground routes to Kurram are restored. Additional shipments will be sent in phases, depending on the evolving needs of the affected communities.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is also taking a firm stance on maintaining security in Kurram.
In response to recent attacks on relief convoys, the provincial authorities have vowed to take “indiscriminate and stringent action” against the culprits. This decision followed a high-level meeting attended by top officials, including the provincial chief secretary, IGP Akhtar Hayat Khan, and law enforcement officers.
Kurram has witnessed decades of unrest, and a new wave of violence has escalated since November 2024, claiming the lives of around 150 people.
The violence began when two convoys, escorted by police, were ambushed, resulting in significant casualties. Despite a peace agreement reached at the start of January, attacks on convoys and government officials, including a targeted assault on Deputy Commissioner Javedullah Mehsud, have continued, highlighting the ongoing instability in the region.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government remains committed to providing much-needed relief and ensuring the security of the people in the region as the situation unfolds.
