LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday imposed a Rs10,000 fine on individuals wasting water by washing vehicles at home.
The directive was issued by Justice Shahid Karim while hearing petitions concerning smog and environmental pollution. The court emphasized the need to conserve water and curb environmental damage amid rising concerns over pollution in Lahore.
In a related move, the Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) was instructed to submit a detailed report on traffic-related pollution. Authorities were also directed to launch public awareness campaigns, particularly in preparation for an upcoming cricket event, to ensure effective traffic management and environmental precautions.
Earlier, the Punjab traffic police presented its November performance report, outlining stringent measures against smog-emitting vehicles. According to officials, over 181,000 smoke-producing vehicles were fined, collecting more than Rs341.5 million in penalties.
The report also noted the suspension of fitness certificates for 4,371 vehicles and the revocation of route permits for 682 smog-emitting vehicles. Authorities registered 260 FIRs against violators and removed over 31,000 polluting vehicles from the roads.
Additionally, more than 29,000 sand and debris-laden tractor trolleys were fined for violating traffic regulations. Authorities underscored that these measures were part of broader efforts to combat worsening air quality in Punjab.
