BEIJING: The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Wednesday urged the United States and Japan to immediately stop interfering in China’s internal affairs and stop manipulating China-related issues.
Spokesperson Guo Jiakun made the remarks during a regular press briefing in response to a query about Japan and U.S. defense ministers discussing the Taiwan question in late March.
Guo said the two countries recently issued a joint statement, making irresponsible remarks about Taiwan and interfering in China’s internal affairs, adding that the Chinese side has lodged stern representations with the U.S. and Japan, expressing its strong dissatisfaction.
The Taiwan question is purely China’s internal affairs and the very core of China’s core interests, which brooks no foreign interference, he said.
The U.S. and Japanese governments have both made solemn commitments to China on the Taiwan question, Guo said, adding that Japan, in particular, bears serious historical responsibilities for its aggression against Taiwan and colonial rule over the island and should all the more act prudently on the Taiwan question.
“We urge the U.S. and Japan to abide by the one-China principle and honor their commitments, and stop manipulating China-related issues,” he said.
