Zelensky says still ready to sign minerals deal despite US White House row

WASHINGTON: In the aftermath of a heated argumentĀ in the White House, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday said that he is still ready to sign a minerals-sharing deal with the US, adding that Trumpā€™s support is ā€œcrucialā€.

The row saw European leaders scramble to voice support for Ukraine after Zelensky was made to leave the White House early and without signing the deal, which is seen as vital to an eventual US-brokered truce.

Zelensky thanked dozens of allies on social media on Saturday, a day after the US presidentĀ shoutedĀ at him in an angry White House meltdown and accused him of not being sufficiently grateful.

The Ukrainian president said he was still ā€œreadyā€ to sign the minerals deal with the United States, despite the televised clash with Trump. ā€œWe are ready to sign the minerals agreement, and it will be the first step toward security guarantees,ā€ Zelensky said in aĀ postĀ on X.

In anotherĀ postĀ on X, he said that Ukraine still needed Donald Trumpā€™s support. ā€œItā€™s crucial for us to have President Trumpā€™s support. He wants to end the war, but no one wants peace more than we do,ā€ Zelensky said.

Earlier on Saturday, ZelenskyĀ on XĀ wrote the words ā€œThank you for your supportā€ in individual replies to around 30 messages of support fromĀ European leadersĀ after his heated clash with the new US administration in the White House.

Despite the confrontation, Zelensky earlier thanked Trump, the US Congress and the American people for their support and for his visit.

ā€œUkraine needs just and lasting peace, and we are working exactly for that,ā€ he wrote.

Ukrainian Foreign MinisterĀ Andrii Sybiha also sent multiple thank yous to European counterparts in a social media flurry on Saturday.

Earlier today, Zelensky said his relations with the United States can still be repaired, after TrumpĀ accusedĀ the Ukrainian leader of refusing to make peace with Russia.

ā€œOf course,ā€ Zelensky said when asked in aĀ Fox NewsĀ interviewĀ if the relationship with Trump could be salvaged.

US-Ukrainian ties are about ā€œmore than two presidentsā€, he said, adding that Ukraine badly needs Washingtonā€™s help in theĀ fightĀ against Russiaā€™s far bigger and better-armed military.

ā€œIt will be difficult without your support,ā€ Zelensky said onĀ Fox ā€” Trumpā€™s favorite news channel.

Zelenskyā€™s olive branch came hours after the extraordinary Oval Office scene where the years-long US policy ofĀ massive supportĀ for Ukraineā€™s fight against Russian invasion collapsed in a shouting match.

During the clash, played out in front of US and international media, Trump and Vice President JD Vance shouted at Zelensky, accusing him of not being ā€œthankfulā€ and refusing to accept their proposed truce terms.

ā€œYou donā€™t have the cards right now,ā€ Trump said. ā€œYouā€™re either going to make a deal or weā€™re out, and if weā€™re out, youā€™ll fight it out and I donā€™t think itā€™s going to be pretty.ā€

Zelensky departed shortly after, with Trump posting on social media that ā€œhe can come back when he is ready for peaceā€.

US mediaĀ reported that Zelensky had been told to leave by senior Trump officials.

The US president told journalists later on Friday that Zelensky was ā€œoverplaying his handā€ and should agree to end fighting ā€œimmediately.ā€

Zelensky, however, refused to apologise, tellingĀ Fox News, ā€œIā€™m not sure that we did something bad.ā€ He did, however, say he wished the exchange had not taken place in front of reporters.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio later onĀ CNN called for Zelensky to ā€œapologise for wasting our time for a meeting that was going to end the way it did.ā€

US allies in Europe ā€” alreadyĀ worriedĀ that Trump will force Ukraine to effectively hand victory to Russian President Vladimir Putin ā€” rushed to back Zelensky.

ā€œYou are not alone,ā€ Polish Prime Minister Donald TuskĀ said.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, fresh off his own visit to the White House, said he had spoken to both Trump and Zelensky by phone following the clash and vowed ā€œunwavering supportā€ for Kyiv.

Far-right Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called for a summit ā€œwithout delayā€ between the United States, Europe and their allies on Ukraine.

Canadaā€™s Foreign Minister Melanie JolyĀ saidĀ she spoke with her Ukrainian counterpart and reaffirmed Canadaā€™s commitment to ā€œproviding the necessary assistance to ensure Ukraineā€™s security, sovereignty, and resilienceā€.

Trump and Vance are ā€œdoing Putinā€™s dirty workā€, top US Senate Democrat Chuck SchumerĀ posted.

But Russia was delighted.

Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev called Zelensky an ā€œinsolent pigā€ who had received ā€œa proper slap down in the Oval Office.ā€

Trumpā€™s Republican Party echoed the Russians in blaming Zelensky.

Ukraine appeared united behind Zelensky, with its army chief vowing to stand with him while the foreign minister praised his ā€œbravery.ā€
