MULTAN: In a first, Pakistan’s motorway police have registered an FIR against a driver for exceeding speed limits, marking a new step in enforcing road safety laws.
According to motorway police spokesperson Syed Imran Ahmed, the incident occurred on the M-4 motorway near Multan, where a vehicle was recorded traveling at an alarming speed of 173 km/h. The driver, identified as Rahim Khan, was arrested and booked at Budhla Sant police station for reckless driving and endangering public safety.
Authorities emphasized their commitment to stricter enforcement of speed limits, warning that vehicles exceeding 150 km/h will be stopped immediately, fined, and subject to legal action. The current speed limits stand at 120 km/h for cars and 110 km/h for public transport vehicles on three-lane motorways.
In a related development, the Lahore High Court (LHC) has ordered a Rs10,000 fine for motorists violating the one-way traffic rule on service roads near schools during peak hours. Justice Shahid Karim, while hearing petitions on traffic management and environmental concerns, stressed that stricter penalties would enhance compliance and reduce congestion.
A member of the Judicial Water and Environment Commission informed the court that despite previous directives, the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) had only issued warnings to schools regarding traffic management but had not taken concrete action.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to stricter enforcement of road safety measures to prevent accidents and ensure smooth traffic flow.
