Fawad Chaudhry slams govt for labeling PTI as terrorists

ISLAMABAD: Former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry has strongly criticised the government for labelling former prime minister Imran Khan and members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) as terrorists, warning that such rhetoric risks alienating millions of Pakistanis and deepening the national divide.

Speaking to reporters outside the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC), where several PTI leaders face charges, Fawad questioned the logic behind designating a party that won 70 percent of the vote as a terrorist organisation. “If PTI is being declared a terrorist outfit, then you’re effectively branding Pakistan as a terrorist state,” he remarked.

Fawad referenced a recent National Security Committee (NSC) meeting where Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur openly questioned the government’s criteria for labeling individuals and groups as terrorists. “This is not just a political issue anymore; it’s about the integrity and unity of Pakistan,” Fawad warned.

He lamented the absence of prominent political voices from Balochistan, including Mahmood Khan Achakzai and other key leaders, in efforts to foster national unity. Drawing a contrast with the post-APS tragedy period, he praised former army chief General Raheel Sharif for uniting the country during a time of crisis. “Sadly, we are missing that spirit of togetherness today,” he said.

Fawad also criticised the government’s response to the recent Jaffer Express attack, where ministers alleged Imran Khan was siding with separatists. “Such reckless accusations only harm Pakistan’s interests and send the wrong message to the world,” he cautioned.

Calling for a broader, inclusive approach, Fawad advocated the formation of a national government to steer the country through its current challenges. “It’s time to put aside partisan politics. Pakistan needs unity, not further division,” he concluded.
