Govt sets Eid-ul-Fitr break from March 31; moon sighting to confirm date

ISLAMABAD: The government has declared a three-day public holiday for Eid-ul-Fitr from March 31 to April 2, 2025, according to a notification issued by the Cabinet Division on Wednesday.

“The prime minister has been pleased to declare March 31 to April 2, 2025 (Monday to Wednesday), as public holidays on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr,” the statement read.

However, the final confirmation of Eid-ul-Fitr will depend on the sighting of the Shawwal moon. The Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee, alongside zonal committees, is scheduled to convene on the evening of March 30 (Sunday) to make the official announcement.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has indicated a strong possibility of sighting the Shawwal moon on March 30, raising the likelihood of Eidul Fitr being celebrated on March 31.

Earlier, the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) had predicted Ramazan to begin on March 2 and Eidul Fitr to fall on March 31.

Eidul Fitr, marking the end of Ramazan, is one of the most significant religious festivals in the Islamic calendar. It celebrates the conclusion of a month-long period of fasting and spiritual reflection.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Railways has announced plans to run four special trains to accommodate the rush of passengers traveling before and after Eid. One of the key routes includes a service from Quetta to Peshawar, passing through Sibbi, Sukkur/Rohri, Khanewal, Lahore, and Rawalpindi.
