GAZA: An Israeli airstrike in northern Gaza has killed Hamas spokesperson Abdel-Latif Al-Qanoua, Hamas-affiliated media reported early Thursday. The strike targeted Al-Qanoua’s tent in Jabalia, further escalating tensions as Israel resumes military operations in the enclave.
The airstrike also wounded several others, while separate attacks across Gaza resulted in at least six deaths in Gaza City and one in Khan Younis, according to medical sources.
The killing of Al-Qanoua follows Israel’s recent targeted strikes on Ismail Barhoum and Salah al-Bardaweel, both members of Hamas’ 20-member political office. Hamas sources state that 11 of these senior leaders have been killed since the war began in late 2023.
Israel ended a two-month ceasefire last week, resuming intense bombing and ground operations. The offensive, aimed at pressuring Hamas to release remaining hostages, has led to the deaths of at least 830 people since March 18, according to Gaza’s health ministry. More than half of those killed were women and children.
Both Israel and Hamas accuse each other of violating the truce, which had largely held since January. The ceasefire had provided temporary relief for Gaza’s 2.3 million residents, many of whom are struggling to survive amid the destruction.
Hamas still holds 59 of the 250 hostages it took during its October 7, 2023 attack, according to Israeli figures. The group has accused Israel of undermining mediator efforts to secure a lasting peace deal.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the renewed offensive, stating that Hamas had rejected proposals to extend the truce. He also reiterated threats to seize Gaza territory if Hamas refuses to release the remaining hostages.
As the conflict escalates, diplomatic efforts to restore a ceasefire remain uncertain, while civilians in Gaza continue to bear the brunt of the ongoing war.
