LAHORE: The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) has seized 420 kilograms of meat from dead animals near Darya Khan, Punjab. The meat was confiscated during a raid conducted with the assistance of local police, and was later destroyed at the designated dumping site.
The PFA received a tip-off and responded by launching an operation. Upon inspection, a veterinary doctor confirmed that the animals had died before slaughter, rendering the meat unfit for consumption under both health and Islamic dietary laws.
A case has been registered against the individual responsible, according to the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP).
The sale of meat from dead animals continues to be a recurring problem across various parts of Pakistan. Last month, police in Chowk Sarwar Shaheed recovered nearly 800 kilograms (20 maund) of such meat from a van at Riazabad Chowk. The driver was arrested while transporting the meat from Chowk Azam to a hotel in Multan. Legal action was initiated on the spot by PFA officers.
In a separate incident in November 2022, city authorities seized two tonnes of meat from dead animals stored at a cold storage facility. The early-morning raid led to the arrest of 11 individuals, and the meat—intended for supply to hotels and markets—was destroyed.
