DIAMER, GILGIT-BALTISTAN: The Karakoram Highway (KKH) was blocked on Wednesday after a heavy landslide struck the Tatta Pani area in Diamer district, stranding hundreds of passengers traveling to and from Islamabad.
According to Diamer Administration Public Relations Officer Raja Ashfaq Tahir, the landslide occurred in the afternoon. “Heavy machinery has been dispatched to the area to remove debris and restore traffic flow,” he confirmed.
The region has been experiencing frequent landslides despite clear skies in recent days, following four days of intermittent rain and snowfall. Tahir added that landslide activity has increased due to recent heavy rains, which also caused flash floods, strong winds, and hailstorms across Gilgit-Baltistan.
Tatta Pani is a known landslide-prone zone, particularly vulnerable due to its muddy terrain along a 5-kilometer stretch. The road is frequently blocked, causing significant inconvenience for travelers moving between GB and other regions of the country.
Authorities expect the blocked section to be cleared within a few hours, allowing stranded passengers to resume their journeys. The KKH remains a vital winter route, especially as Babusar Top stays closed due to snow until May.
Police confirmed that landslides had also disrupted the Jaglot-Skardu Road and other key arteries on Tuesday, though most have since been reopened to traffic.
