MASTUNG: Two Levies personnel were martyred on Tuesday in a targeted attack while providing security to a polio vaccination team in Mastung, Balochistan, officials confirmed.
According to initial reports, the assailants opened fire on the security team, killing Naik Muhammad on the spot. The second officer, Maqsood Ahmed, sustained critical injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his wounds.
The tragic incident has raised serious concerns over the safety of frontline workers and their security escorts during public health campaigns in volatile regions.
Balochistan government spokesperson Shahid Rind condemned the attack, describing it as a “tragic and cowardly act.” He affirmed that such incidents would not derail the province’s efforts to eradicate polio.
“A thorough investigation is underway, and all aspects of the incident are being closely examined,” Rind said. “We salute the bravery and sacrifice of our Levies personnel and remain committed to continuing the anti-polio campaign despite the threats.”
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
