Punjab heatwave to continue as temperatures approach 45°C, says PMD

ISLAMABAD: A severe heatwave continues to affect Punjab, with temperatures expected to climb as high as 45°C by the end of April, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

Lahore and much of Punjab are experiencing a rise in temperatures under dry conditions. The minimum temperature recorded in Lahore was 23°C, with the city expected to reach highs of 40°C. As temperatures soar, the use of air conditioning in homes and offices has increased.

Meteorologists predict no rainfall for the next two to three days, meaning the heat will persist, further intensifying the conditions.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has confirmed the ongoing heatwave in the province, with temperatures in southern districts like Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Multan possibly reaching 45°C by the end of the month.

Recent temperatures include 44°C in Bahawalnagar, 42°C in Rahim Yar Khan and Bhakkar, and 41°C in Kot Addu. Central Punjab areas such as Toba Tek Singh, Sargodha, Sahiwal, Okara, Mandi Bahauddin, Khanewal, Kasur, Jhang, Hafizabad, and Faisalabad have recorded temperatures nearing 40°C.

In response, authorities have taken precautionary measures as instructed by the Punjab chief minister. PDMA has ensured water supplies to desert regions like Cholistan, and hospitals across the province have set up heatwave response counters. Health departments have also been directed to stock essential medicines for treating heatstroke, while media channels are being used to raise awareness about the dangers of extreme heat.
