LAHORE: The Punjab Home Department has launched an electronic surveillance initiative requiring repeat offenders and individuals listed in the Fourth Schedule of the Pakistan Penal Code to wear GPS-enabled tracking bands.
The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Home Secretary Noorul Amin Mengal, where officials outlined plans to monitor high-risk individuals across the province.
A total of 1,500 GPS devices have been procured for the program, with 900 assigned to the Counter Terrorism Department, 500 to the newly established Crime Control Department, and 100 to the Parole Department.
Mengal also instructed the import of advanced tracking technology, including microchips, based on expert recommendations to ensure round-the-clock monitoring.
Officials attending the meeting included Special Home Secretary Fazalur Rehman, Additional IG Crime Control Suhail Zafar Chatha, DIG Operations Punjab Waqas Nazeer, and Additional Police Secretary Dr Zeeshan Hanif, along with representatives from the law and finance departments.
A spokesperson for the Home Department said the program aligns Punjab’s crime-prevention infrastructure with international standards, aiming to prevent offences through real-time monitoring of habitual offenders.
