KARACHI: A 19-year-old girl, Laiba, was fatally shot by a stray bullet during aerial firing at a wedding in New Karachi on Wednesday night, prompting police to register a murder case and arrest three suspects.
Laiba was studying on her rooftop for upcoming exams when she was struck in the head by a bullet allegedly fired by wedding guests nearby.
An FIR was filed by her brother, Muhammad Tanveer, under Sections 302, 109, and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code, naming the groom Ahmed Raza and five of his friends—Umar, Abdul Rehman, Usman, Faizan, and Zeeshan—as accused.
According to the complaint, the groom allegedly encouraged his friends to participate in celebratory firing during the procession.
New Karachi SHO Faizul Hassan confirmed the arrest of Faizan, Abdul Rehman, and Dost Muhammad Junaid and said police recovered three unlicensed weapons, including a 30-bore pistol, a 9mm pistol, and a 22 rifle.
A police spokesperson said the wedding party was headed to Hyderabad and had been involved in fireworks and gunfire as part of the celebrations.
Forensic teams recovered multiple spent bullet casings from the scene, suggesting that several types of firearms were used.
