The Sindh government has declared May 1, 2025, a public holiday in the province to observe International Labour Day. This annual observance celebrates the contributions and struggles of workers worldwide and underscores the importance of fair labour practices, safe working conditions, and workers’ rights.
A notification from the Services, General Administration and Coordination Department confirmed that all government and semi-government offices will remain closed, as well as all public and private educational institutions, including schools, colleges, and universities.
Internationally known as May Day, Labour Day is a global event that honors the working class and highlights ongoing efforts for better wages, shorter working hours, and improved workplace safety. The Sindh government’s decision aligns with worldwide observances that recognize the sacrifices made by labourers in their fight for justice and equality.
In Pakistan, Labour Day has been recognized as a public holiday since 1972. The day is marked by rallies, seminars, and other events, with trade unions and labour rights groups leading the charge in promoting workers’ rights and welfare.
