Sharjeel Memon urges end to protests after resolution of canal issue

KARACHI: Senior Sindh Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon has said that the dispute over the controversial canal project has been fully resolved under the leadership of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari.

In a statement on Sunday, Memon praised Bilawal’s efforts in addressing the matter and announced that the issue would be formally closed after the Council of Common Interests (CCI) meeting on May 2. He appealed to political parties and the legal community to reopen the blocked roads to ensure smooth transport and avoid further economic losses.

Memon highlighted that the ongoing highway closures were affecting the public, farmers, livestock, imports, and exports. His remarks came after police clashed with protesting lawyers in Karachi’s Gulshan-i-Hadeed area, injuring at least six people.

The government earlier halted the canals project following protests, a Sindh Assembly resolution, and growing concerns over India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty. Work on the project remains suspended pending CCI consensus.

Despite the announcement, protests continued across Sindh, including sit-ins in Khairpur and Karachi. Memon urged protesters to keep demonstrations peaceful and clear roads to prevent further public inconvenience, stating that the Sindh government remains open to negotiations with all stakeholders.
