ISLAMABAD: China on Sunday voiced support for Pakistan’s efforts to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity amid rising tensions with India following the Pahalgam attack, urging both sides to exercise restraint. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi conveyed the message during a phone call with Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar to discuss the evolving situation in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
The Chinese Foreign Ministry quoted Wang as reaffirming China’s understanding of Pakistan’s security concerns and its backing of Islamabad’s sovereignty and security interests. The support is seen as crucial at a time when the risk of a limited or wider conflict between Pakistan and India is increasing.
Strategic experts suggest that China’s involvement will be a major factor in any Indian decision-making regarding military options against Pakistan. China’s position indicates it would not want Pakistan to suffer any setback in case of conflict.
The conversation between Dar and Wang took place as Indian media speculated that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government could consider military action against Pakistan following the April 22 attack in Pahalgam. Pakistan has denied involvement and offered to join a neutral and transparent investigation into the incident.
Wang stressed that China supports Pakistan’s call for an impartial probe and emphasized that conflict would harm the interests of both India and Pakistan and threaten regional stability. He expressed hope that both sides would show restraint and seek de-escalation.
During the conversation, Dar briefed Wang on Pakistan’s efforts to combat terrorism and avoid actions that could escalate tensions. Dar reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to a mature handling of the situation and assured continued communication with China and the international community.
Wang reiterated that fighting terrorism is a shared responsibility and reaffirmed China’s support for Pakistan’s counterterrorism measures. He also said China was closely monitoring developments in the region following the attack.
The Foreign Office in Islamabad issued a separate statement noting that Dar rejected India’s unilateral actions and propaganda against Pakistan. Dar expressed appreciation for China’s consistent support and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening the Pakistan-China strategic partnership.
Both sides pledged to promote peace, mutual respect, and regional stability while opposing unilateralism and hegemonic policies. They agreed to maintain close communication and coordination at all levels to advance shared goals of peace, security, and development.
Separately, Dar spoke with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy to brief him on the regional situation and India’s actions, including its unilateral move to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty. Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s determination to defend its national interests and promote regional peace.
Lammy emphasized the need for dialogue and peaceful resolution, while Dar reiterated Pakistan’s readiness to participate in an independent and transparent investigation. Both sides agreed to maintain close contact on the evolving situation.
