Lawyer booked for online support of Mahrang Baloch

RAWALPINDI: The Federal Investigation Agency’s Cyber Crime Reporting Centre in Islamabad has registered a case against lawyer Jalila Haider for allegedly supporting Baloch activist Mahrang Baloch on social media. The case was filed under Sections 9, 10, and 26-A of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016 on behalf of the state.

According to the complaint by Cyber Crime Reporting Centre Technical Assistant Aneesur Rehman, Mahrang Baloch is listed under the Fourth Schedule of the Anti-Terrorism Act. Jalila Haider allegedly shared content in her support, which the complaint claims could cause public unrest and anxiety.

An investigation has been initiated following the registration of the case. Mahrang and other Baloch Yekjehti Committee leaders began a hunger strike on Friday to protest the alleged torture of detainees and the transfer of activist Beebow Baloch to District Jail Pishin.

Mahrang and several activists were arrested on March 22 during a crackdown on protests against alleged enforced disappearances in Quetta. Her detention under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance has drawn condemnation from Baloch rights advocates and international human rights organisations.
