UNITED NATIONS: As tensions rise between INDIA and PAKISTAN, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has reiterated his willingness to back any peace initiatives that are mutually acceptable to both nations, emphasizing dialogue and de-escalation as the only sustainable path forward.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Guterres said he was “deeply concerned” about the current situation and urged both governments to show “maximum restraint” to prevent any further deterioration in relations.
“The Secretary-General remains convinced that even the most complex disputes can be resolved through peaceful, meaningful, and constructive dialogue,” the statement said, adding that he was closely monitoring developments.
The UN also clarified that its Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP), tasked with monitoring ceasefire violations along the Line of Control, does not operate in the region where the recent attack took place but continues to fulfill its mandate under the 1971 ceasefire agreement.
The UN chief’s comments come amid rising hostilities following the April 22 incident in Indian-administered Kashmir, which left dozens dead and has led to heightened rhetoric and diplomatic measures from both sides.
