Wagah border reopens temporarily to facilitate long-term visa holders

The Wagah-Attari border has been reopened for two days to assist citizens holding long-term and no objection return to India visas despite tensions between Pakistan and India. Security sources said the temporary reopening aimed to help individuals stranded due to the recent closure.

On Monday, 129 Pakistani passport holders with NORI visas crossed into India while no Indian citizens entered Pakistan. Indian nationals with Pakistani long-term visas are expected to arrive on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Diplomatic officials explained that Pakistan grants long-term visas to Indian citizens, mainly women married to Pakistani nationals who have not acquired citizenship. These individuals can return to Pakistan after visiting India without needing a new visa.

India issues long-term visas and NORI certificates to Pakistani nationals settled there, allowing similar travel flexibility. The Wagah-Attari border was closed earlier amid escalating tensions, creating difficulties for these visa holders.

Business, tourism, and medical visas were cancelled, but the latest arrangement temporarily accommodates long-term visa holders. Many citizens were stranded for four days awaiting clearance to return home.
