Mother of rape victim seeks CM’s intervention over police inefficiency

The mother of a nine-year-old rape and murder victim has appealed to Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar to intervene in the case due to the inefficiency of the police in bringing her daughter’s killer to justice.

So far, the police have registered the first information report (FIR) and have arrested a total of three suspects. Along with the main suspect, Babar Masih, his wife Aniqa has now also been arrested. The third person arrested was a man named Rana Adnan.

Shumaila Gul, the mother, has asserted that the police have been uncooperative with her. She asserted that the police did not arrest two other people suspected of the crime as they were influential figures.

She went on to add that she would commit suicide soon if she is not assisted in the matter and given justice. Gul also demanded that those accused in the case should be hanged publicly for their heinous crime.

Protesters on Tuesday had blocked the main road in Rawalpindi and attempted to barge into the Civil Lines police station following the rape and murder of the nine-year-old girl late on Monday night.

The incident took place in the Jhanda Chichi area of the city where the girl went missing after she left her home to buy something from a nearby shop. Her body was later found from under the bed of a family’s neighbour.

The police detained a suspect, identified as Babar Masih, following the incident and moved him to the Civil Lines police station, where the protesters had gathered asking the officers to hand over the alleged culprit, saying they would hang him publicly.

A scuffle was witnessed at the police station with heavy contingents of the law enforcement agency barring the protesters from entering the premises. Moreover, elite force commandos had also been deputed on the site to beef up the security.

The crowd dispersed after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MPA Chaudhry Adnan and SSP (operations) had reached the scene and assured the protesters of delivering justice and producing the suspect in the court with concrete evidence.

The police had said that as per the initial investigation, the minor was sexually assaulted before being killed. However, they had added that that the post-mortem report would ascertain the suspicion and the cause of death. They also had added that the suspect, Babar Masih, was being interrogated, adding that his DNA sample will also be sent for a test.

On Sunday, a nine-year-old girl was raped by two men in Gujranwala. According to police, two men after taking the girl to the house located in Shahzada Colony in Gujranwala allegedly raped her.
