Federal govt not to withdraw murder charges against TLP workers

ISLAMABAD: The parliamentary party of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and its allied parties Tuesday were informed that the federal government has decided to maintain its ban on the proscribed organization of Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP).

According to sources in the PTI, Prime Minister Imran Khan chaired the meeting, wherein Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed and Minister for Religious Affairs Pir Noorul Haq Qadri briefed the party on talks with banned TLP.

The meeting was informed that, according to the agreement, the government would present a resolution in the National Assembly (NA). The sources said that the meeting was informed that the TLP workers charged with murder would also not released and the cases against them would remain intact.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Imran said that the entire nation is united over the issue of blasphemous caricatures. The PM added that the objective of the TLP was right but the procedure was not.

He maintained that Pakistan had presented a strong case on caricatures and Islamophobia at the international level and the same needed wisdom as well as a comprehensive strategy.

Later, Minister for Information Fawad Chaudhry told the media that those arrested on serious charges will have to face court proceedings.

“Those who have been charged under murder charges cannot be released. We cannot forget those police officials who have been martyred,” he said.

Fawad said that if we sow seeds of hatred in history, we will not harvest love.

“PM Imran Khan’s government is determined to make Pakistan a progressive Pakistan. This is what Imran Khan dreams for,” he added.

Fawad said that the way Shahid Khaqan Abbasi hurled threats at the National Assembly (NA) speaker suggests that these people have not reached these positions on the basis of ability.

“He does not know the way to speak to the speaker at the floor of the House. We wanted to move towards reforms along with the opposition. Why do they say such things which jeopardise the sanctity of the parliament,” he concluded.
