Pakistan nears 900,000 mark with 4,007 new coronavirus infections

ISLAMABAD: Over the past 24 hours Pakistan reported 4,007 new Covid-19 cases, a step closer to the 900,000 mark.

Data provided by the NCOC showed that at least 88 more people succumbed to the virus, pushing the total number of death to 20,177.

The national positivity rate stood at 6.43% while the number of active cases was reported at 63,436. Additionally, 813,855 people have recovered from the virus so far.

Pakistan is currently battling through a deadly third wave of the coronavirus and restrictions put in place two weeks ago have been mostly lifted.

Sindh and Punjab remain the largest contributors to the caseload and death toll in the country.

Provincial numbers show that Sindh has reached 306,707 positive cases to date with 4,891 dead.

Punjab’s total number of Covid-19 patients to date stands at 333,057 with 9,739 dead. .

Vaccination drive

Inocula­tion against Covid-19 of people aged 30 years and above is set to start from Saturday (today) as the National Assembly was informed that local production of the anti-coronavirus vaccine has begun.

In a tweet, Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar, who also heads the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), said: “In today’s (Friday) NCOC meeting it has been decided to open up vaccination for 30 years and older starting tomorrow. The messages for those who are being scheduled will go out today.”

So far 1,193,441 people have been fully vaccinated, 2,631,873 partially with 4,956,853 total doses administered.
