PESHAWAR: Frontier Constabulary troops used tear gas Thursday to disperse hundreds of people who tried to storm a border crossing with Afghanistan, a day after the Taliban seized control of the Afghan side of the frontier, security officials said.
“This morning a mob of some 400 unruly commuters tried to cross the gate forcefully. They threw stones, which forced us to use tear gas,” said a security official at the border, who asked not to be named.
Chaman Deputy Commissioner Jumadad Khan Mandokhail said the situation was now “under control”.
Taliban fighters in Afghanistan seized control of a major border crossing with Pakistan on Wednesday, achieving a key strategic objective during a rapid advance across the country as US forces pull out.
An official in Pakistan said Taliban insurgents had taken down the Afghan government flag from atop the Friendship Gate at the border crossing between the district of Chaman and the Afghanistan town of Wesh.
The crossing, south of Afghanistan’s main southern city Kandahar, is the landlocked state’s second busiest entry point and main commercial artery between its sprawling southwest region and Pakistan’s sea ports. Afghan government data indicate that the route is used by 900 trucks a day.
The Taliban takeover forced Pakistan to seal parts of its border with Afghanistan after heavy fighting between insurgent and Afghan government forces around Wesh.
