ISLAMABAD: The number of patients recovered from Covid-19 in the country exceeded one million mark on Friday, the National Command and Operation Centre’s data showed.
The NCOC counted 1,002,430 recovered cases after 3,027 more survivors were recorded. Meanwhile, 70 more people lost their lives to the disease, raising the death toll to 24,783.
The infection tally also rose to 1,116,886 with 3,239 new cases reported over the last 24 hours after 51,982 Covid-19 tests were conducted, the NCOC data showed. The daily positivity rate was recorded at 6.23 percent. The number of active cases stands at 89,673, which has been the highest since May 2 when the country recorded 89,661 active cases.
Pakistan has administered at least 44,736,977 doses of Covid-19 vaccines so far. Assuming every person needs two doses, that’s enough to have vaccinated about 10.3 percent of the country’s population.
During the last week reported, Pakistan averaged about 716,137 doses administered each day. At that rate, it will take a further 61 days to administer enough doses for another 10 percent of the population.
Meanwhile, Punjab reported 956 Covid cases and 24 more deaths due to the virus during the past 24 hours. According to provincial health secretary Sara Aslam, 9 deaths were reported from Lahore during the period.
She said that active cases in Punjab now total 20,602, adding that the tally of the positive cases in the province stood at 377,209. She further stated that the total number of deaths due to the virus is currently at the 11,477 mark. The health secretary said that some 342,932 patients have recovered from the disease so far.
Sindh reported at least 1,039 new coronavirus cases during the last 24 hours, taking the tally to 418,461. According to Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, 10 more patients succumbed to the deadly virus as the death toll jumped to 6,566.
He further said that 1,306 more patients recovered from the disease, taking the total to 364,455. Shah announced that schools will remain closed for another week as the province continued to battle an onslaught of Covid-19 cases.
Murad added that teachers and parents of the students will also have to show their vaccination certificates to the concerned authority. He also ordered the authorities to ensure vaccination of all the schools’ staffers.
At least 25 more people contracted coronavirus in Balochistan during the past 24 hours, taking the tally to 30,845. According to health officials, no deaths were reported in the province. So far 335 patients have died from the deadly virus. As many as 29,981 patients have recovered from the disease in the province so far.
