The deputy chairman of the National Accountability Bureau has tendered his resignation to President Dr Arif Alvi, reports citing sources said.
Reasons behind the decision of Hussain Asghar — a retired officer of the Police Service of Pakistan cadre who was appointed deputy chief in April 2019 — to step down days before the completion of the anti-graft agency chief’s three-year tenure could not be ascertained.
While some reports said Asghar had sent his resignation to the president, however, Geo News said neither its sources in the agency or those in the presidency confirmed receiving the resignation.
According to laws governing the bureau, resignation by any official of the watchdog is first sent to the chief, and if it involves the deputy chairman, chairman and prosecutor general, the matter is referred to the president for the final nod.
Citing a source close to Asghar, Dawn said he was not feeling comfortable while working for the agency.
