Dense fog disrupts flight operations at Lahore airport

LAHORE: Flight operations at Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore remained suspended Tuesday due to poor visibility caused by dense fog in and around the Punjab capital.

The visibility was reduced to 50 metres at the airport and adjoining neighbourhoods.

According to an airport official, both international and domestic flights were cancelled and diverted due to fog and the operation would be resumed after improvement in the weather conditions.

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight PK-186 from Sharjah en route to Lahore was cancelled due to poor visibility. Abu Dhabi-bound flight PK-263 soon followed suit.

Serene Air flight ER 524, coming from Karachi to Lahore, and Karachi-bound ER 525 were also cancelled.

Lahore is used to experiencing fog in early winter but for some years, smog and pollution have badly affected the region. Persistent smog and air pollution restrict the visibility range which also results in hygiene issues.
