Court grants bail to Zardari in New York property case

An accountability court in Islamabad on Saturday granted bail to former president Asif Ali Zardari on medical grounds in the New York apartment case.

Judge Mohammad Bashir heard the case and issued a detailed verdict.

“Asif Ali Zardari is being granted permanent bail due to his health problems,” the court said in its decision.

“The New York property case against Asif Ali Zardari is in the inquiry phase. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has yet to collect evidence against him in the case,” the court observed.

“The NAB could submit petition in the court with regard to cancellation of his bail on the basis of substantial evidence,” the court said.

The NAB had served Asif Ali Zardari a notice along with a questionnaire to provide information about his property in New York, United States.

He had subsequently obtained pre-arrest bail from the Islamabad High Court (IHC) to avoid his arrest by the NAB.

Asif Ali Zardari had denied owning the expensive apartment in New York. “I had sold out the apartment the same year I purchased it,” a report quoted him as saying in the reply he filed through his lawyers.
