ECP seeks early hearing against PHC ruling delaying KP LG polls’ second phase

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday filed an appeal in the Supreme Court seeking early hearing of its pending petition against a Peshawar High Court (PHC) ruling delaying the second phase of local government polls in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The ECP, in its appeal, requested the apex court to fix its pending petition for early hearing.

A few days ago, the ECP had filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the PHC’s order postponing the second phase of local government elections in KP that were scheduled to be held on March 27 this year.

The PHC had postponed the next phase of LG elections, directing the ECP to hold the elections after Ramazan keeping in view the harsh weather forecast for March.

The PHC had also suspended the ECP notification of January 20, 2022, regarding holding the second phase of the local body polls in 18 districts of KP on March 27, 2022.
