Opposition’s no-trust motion would fizzle out: Qureshi

ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi Saturday said that Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and its coalition partners would defeat the no-confidence vote proposed against the prime minister by the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) in the parliament.

He said it was a right of the anti-government movement to table such a motion in the House which would be countered by the ruling MPs in a constitutional manner.

In a press statement, the foreign minister said it was the duty of the ruling party’s lawmakers and its partners in the parliament to defeat such a move.

The opposition began its negative activities after the 2018 general elections which exposed their intentions from day one. They even did not allow the prime minister to deliver his maiden speech in the House, he added.

He further noted the opposition repeatedly failed in such efforts in the past and declared they would meet the same fate again.

Qureshi said: “The PTI members of the parliament will strongly resist such move and defend their captain. The opposition parties would have been in the government if they had the required votes.”

He said the parliament was going through the fourth year of its tenure and the local government elections were underway and under such a situation, no politician or a parliamentarian, having proper political understanding, would divert attention from the polls and join the opposition’s ranks.

Qureshi said the opposition parties lacked unity in their ranks, perhaps the purported motion of no confidence could be their requirement and desire and due to a pressure exerted by the pending legal cases.
