Good governance

Good governance is crucial for the upkeep of a healthy democratic process. Transparency, accountability, efficiency, and the rule of law are the foundations of good governance. Policies formed on these bases are aimed at ensuring the well-being of the people and prosperity of the country, which can support economic and social development. Unfortunately, Pakistan lacks sound governance and the rule of law, which has led to myriad economic and social problems. Mismanagement and poor policies have intensified issues such as unemployment, illiteracy, soaring inflation, rising current account deficit, depreciation, etc.

At present, the country requires sound governance policies that can reform the socio-economic situation. The past government vociferously promoted the Right to Information Act 2013, which was supposed to be a bedrock for good governance and democracy. However, the provincial information commissions have remained defunct. Perhaps, the government should begin by ensuring all the commissions are up and running. Having access to information about government and private bodies that receive public funds is empowering for citizens and makes them feel included in the political process. Also, the government should work on improving accountability within institutions and organisations. Corrupt officials should be removed from their positions and the hiring procedure for both public and private organisations should be merit-based.

Transparency and good governance not just help the people but increase the popularity of the leaders amongst the masses. Therefore, the government should ensure the implementation of all the laws that empower the people as well as draw new socio-economic strategies that can relieve the people of everyday difficulties.
