Members of civil society staged a protest outside the Karachi Press Club on Tuesday and demanded justice for Nazim Jokhio, who was found murdered at the farmhouse of a Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) lawmaker in November last year.
MPA Jam Awais and his brother and MNA Jam Abdul Karim along with several others were booked for allegedly torturing Nazim to death after he stopped their foreign guests from hunting houbara bustard.
Last week, police excluded the names of the two lawmakers from the final charge sheet submitted to an anti-terrorism court.
During Tuesday’s protest, scores of people from different walks of life held up placards demanding justice for the deceased and lambasted the abuse of power by the lawmakers.
They also demanded immediate support to the family and asked why Nazim Jokhio’s wife backed down. They said that everyone knows that it is the duty of civil society to be the voice of the downtrodden. If police cover up the case, then they too are accomplice to the murder, speakers at the protest said.
“We want justice nothing else,” said Shireen Asad. She said that the civil society was standing with Jokhio’s wife as there was no one else who could support her due to fear of the killers.
Lawyer Jibran Nasir said that the protesters have gathered not merely to chant slogans against the PPP but to demand justice and talk about principles.
“Nazim was also a (PPP) jiyala,” he said, adding that the only difference is that the deceased was a common man. “This is a class war for which we have taken to the streets.”
