ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan said on Wednesday that the country’s economy is heading towards destruction, underscoring that early elections is the only way to steer the country out of the prevailing turmoil.
Talking to Pakistan Muslim League-Zia (PML-Z) chief Ijazul Haq, who called on him at his Bani Gala residence in Islamabad, Imran Khan said all that the rulers wanted was ‘NRO’. “And that’s why they had come to power,” he said, adding, “The coalition government has done nothing for the country’s economy.”
Both the leaders discussed the prevailing political situation of the country and expressed the resolve to continue working together to salvage the situation.
They also expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of senior army officers, including the core commander Quetta, in a helicopter crash in Lasbela Balochistan, and prayed to The Almighty Allah to rest the departed souls in eternal peace.
The PTI chairman, on the occasion, said he had good relations with Lt-Gen Sarfaraz Ali. “He was an extremely competent and honest person,” Imran said while paying tribute to the late army officer.
Speaking on the occasion, Ijazul Haq said that the government had been left with no option. “That’s why sometimes it tries to get PTI out of political race through judiciary and sometimes through the Election Commission of Pakistan,” he said, adding, “However, all their efforts will fail.”
Ijaz said that the ECP’s decision was similar to the one given on the National Awami Party (NAP) several decades ago. “But the world has changed now. Everybody should bear this thing in mind that neither ban on the NAP had produced desirable results, nor any kind of ban on PTI, the most popular party of the country, will be welcomed by the people,” he stated categorically.
